Mmmmbye, Smelly Yoga Pants

January 4, 2019

I have a true confession. Almost all of my athletic gear gets that nasty, workout smell no matter how many times I wash them. And before you think I’m some hard-core athlete training for the Olympics, I’m literally walking my kids to the park, sometimes going for a jog but most of the time just sitting on the sofa watching Netflix and eating Chex mix.

Some of the smell come from sweat, but the biggest culprit is our washing machine. If we leave damp clothes too long in the washer, the smell develops. (We're talking minutes!)

I was ready to toss it all until I remembered all the work I put into my stained white shirts, and decided to track down another clothes-saving remedy! There are a lot of articles out there, so here is what I settled on for the perfect recipe:

  1. Soak your gym clothes in a clean sink or tub (I actually used a large plastic bucket) with a water and white vinegar solution.

  2. I used cold water and around one cup of vinegar. My soak was 5 yoga pants (for size reference).

  3. Soak for 30 mins.

  4. Wash your clothes on the regular wash cycle.

  5. I washed my clothes a second time as there was a slight smell of vinegar lingering.

  6. IT WAS A MIRACLE!!! The smell was gone from my athletic gear!!! Do this immediately. I feel like I have a whole new set of workout clothes!

For more information, I found this article to be the most helpful in preventing  and removing smells.
