Saving White Dress Shirts, One Under Arm Stain at a Time

January 2, 2019

I know we’d all like to think it’s the shirts… not our under arms making those yellow stains. Actually, it’s neither. It’s your antiperspirant. I won’t get into the chemistry of it all, but I will help you fix the problem.

First things first, out of all the problems to solve in the world… I sought out underarm stains. I’m really not that vein,  but the truth is I was tossing out perfectly good shirts due to this discoloration problem and that felt wasteful and unnecessary. Cue Google search “getting rid of yellow pit stains”… cute, right?!  I found a great article from POPSUGAR  and followed the direction word for word… and (spoiler alert) it WORKED. Here are my thoughts, recommendations and pointers below. SO SWEAT AWAY!

Here is my condensed version:

  1. Soak shirt in a bowl or basin filled with 2 cups warm water and 1 cup vinegar for 20 mins.

  2. Meanwhile, mix a ½ cup baking soda, 1 tablespoon salt and 1 table spoon of hydrogen peroxide to form a paste.

  3. Remove shirts form soak, squeeze excess water until shirt is damp, lay flat on a clean towel and coast underarm stain with paste (outside and inside shirt). Let sit 20 mins.

  4. Then toss the shirt in the wash with your other whites and… ta-da!! A fresh, pit-stain-free shirt!
